Every artist paints history through the lens of their own experience.

Raphael gathered the greatest minds of the Renaissance into a single imagined space, creating a visual celebration of the ideas that shaped Western civilization. That inspired me to ask a similar question: Who are the men and women who have shaped America over the last 250 years?

Rather than philosophers of ancient Greece, the participants are America's statesmen, scientists, inventors, artists, reformers, explorers, entrepreneurs, and spiritual leaders—individuals whose ideas and sacrifices helped define the nation.

School of America began with Raphael's concept as a point of departure, but evolved into a distinctly American vision. I reimagined the architecture, lighting, symbolism, relationships between the figures, and overall mood to reflect America's unique story rather than Renaissance Italy.

This painting is a conversation across five centuries—between Raphael's celebration of the Renaissance and America's ongoing search for its own identity. It is both an homage to one of history's greatest masterpieces and an exploration of the people and ideas that have shaped the American experience.

Each generation ultimately decides who belongs in the School of America.
