One of the most touching and emotional scenes in the New Testament is when Jesus had his apostles with him for the Last Supper. He knew it would be his final opportunity to teach them the sacred nature of who He was and what their callings would be before he would offer His life. He began by washing their feet to emphasize the humility required to be a servant of God. He exposed Judas and afterward expressed His love for each of them and for His Father. As the artist, I had to decide how to portray this scene. I chose to focus on the emotion of the people and the somber mood of that night. I wanted there to be a feeling of authenticity without distracting from the story. I could see the apostles gathering around their Lord, to comfort Him and express their love for Jesus. How would we have felt had we been there? I can imagine there was many tears shed that night. One of my favorite words spoken by Christ at the Last Supper was, “This is my commandment, that ye love one another, as I have loved you. Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends” John 15:12,13
